Help with a Rib Injury
Hi
I recently suffered a bicycle crash (10 days ago) where I landed on my left side. The usual road rash ensued, and my head hit the pavement (thanks to my helmet no injury there), but my side hurt. I took a couple days off and then went back in the pool to swim and started bicycling again. I have stayed away from the weights, running and basketball.
My ribs (left side) haven't gotten any better, but all the other injuries are cleared up. Any twisting/turning, or load bearing (like laying on my side) or sudden movements (slamming a car door) hurts. Most of the pain is centered in the middle of my chest (where the ribs attach to the sternum).
Does anyone have any advice, remedies, experiences, cures, etc?
I setup a doctor's appointment for tomorrow. I swam today and it seemed to get worse. I really, Really don't want to get laid up right now.
You need an x-ray to find out if you have any fractured ribs. In the meantime, try otc anti-inflammatories like Aleve or ibuprofen. A rib fracture takes about six weeks to heal. A contusion takes less time. You may have an inflammation of the costochondral joints which can cause the pain you have described.
