How do I know if my homemade product requires UL certification?
I've been building these 4 foot tall robots in my garage out of wood and other materials. They're basically decorative furniture pieces (like for a kids room or a rec room) with a light bulb on its head, one more inside the head, and a power strip inside it's chest that's accessible through a door. My wife suggested I start offering them for sale. We're not looking to start a big business or anything, but rather just make them to order should anyone want one. I'm wondering if I'm required to get UL certification, or if the fact that these are home made, small quantity items makes them exempt. Also, if I do need to get it, any idea what it might cost for something like this? Thanks.
As soon as you start offering them for sale, you will probably need to have them tested. Failure to do so could possibly land you into a lot of hot water.
Our company builds motor control centers for various customers. Even though all of the components are UL listed by themselves, we still have to have a license from UL to build the MCC's. There is paperwork involved as well as personal inspections of your "factory" by UL personnel. As to fees, I cannot answer that question.
