Boxee Media Center by Nailzilla
For those that have been living in a technology cave the last couple months Boxee is a new program created for sole purposes of experiencing movies, TV shows, music and photos to your PC/Mac or even a TV. It has a low memory overhead and will run on Mac, Linux, and in the future Windows operating systems. If you are running a Mac you can easily setup Boxee on your Apple TV to stream them to your entertainment center.
Currently Boxee is free to try for Mac and Linux, with very many tutorials to help you install this found on their forums, mostly geared towards Ubuntu of course.
For those that are holding out until the Windows release candidate, here is a taste of what Boxee will have to experience when it releases.
The logon screen is very straight forward, and it is free to create account on the Boxee site. I do not see why anyone would have more than one user account for themselves, but perhaps in a household and to differentiate between RSS feeds I can see why a client would need more than one.
After logging in you will be at the main screen which shows the most recommended videos on the internet portion of the program, recently watched movies of your friends, recently added content by yourself, and lastly your most recent watched flicks.
When you scroll your mouse or remote to the left side of the screen the main menu will come to the front. This consists of the list below, Video, Music, Pictures, CD/DVD, Profile, Settings, and Exit.. which is self explanatory I hope.
Boxee's video section branches out to options such as Movies, TV, Internet being the most popular. When you select Movies or TV it will show what you have on your local PC and other network shared devices that fit the category. Here is what mine looks like for Movies. Note: it will show trailers and full lenght purchased movies both.
When choosing the Internet option it shows a list of 18 different sites to stream from, this has been constantly growing and updated and for Windows they will soon be adding Netflix support. Currently their list of most popular is: Apple Trailers, BBC, CBS, CNN, Comedy Central, Hulu, MTV, WB, Youtube. Not too shabby.
The same format goes for the Music section, where you can stream music from Last.fm as well.
For Pictures it also lets you have access to Picasa and Flickr.
Boxee also lets you keep your friends online updated with what you are watching through such portals as Twitter.
Along the same lines of Twitter and Facebook, Boxee has a friend system built into it so you can view what your friends have recommended to watch, and also just socialize with others that have the same tastes as you.
It took me about a full day to setup my Boxee computer, hook it up to my media center remote control and program it, then connect it finally to my TV.
My setup consists of the Boxee PC in the living room connected to my PC and being controlled by a remote control. It is connected from my PC to TV through an S-video cable with an audio out splitter cable for stereo sound, soon to be 5.1 digital. The computer specs are very minimal and the graphics card is low spec as well, but it handles everything like a champ even when streaming mkv files.
If you are a media whore like myself you have many files thrown around your computer, but with Boxee you can setup file sharing and point it to each of these directories on your main computer. So now when I go to the living room and want to watch a movie that is on my PC, its right there. You can choose from local media or networked media and it is very easy to setup.
Now if you have tried other media center extenders or machines in the past you have no doubt seen how pretty they look in the online youtube videos but then when actually using them yourself you wonder why it is so horrible. This usually relates to users of the program having cover and album art for everything they own so it looks fancy. With Boxee it will automatically find and download the cover art you need as shown above. I did not have to hunt down the perfect album art screenshots, it did it for me.
Personally I own a Western Digital TV device, picked it up for $99 as an extra gift for myself for Christmas for the sole purpose of playing.mkv 1080p files to my television. With further use of Boxee I am sure I will be replacing it and selling it to the highest bidder.
The settings and options inside Boxee do not disappoint. You can change the aspect ratio of your resolution, choose between digital and analog audio output, set a slideshow screensaver with your pictures, and much more. They will take an entirely different post to summarize them all.
As Boxee is in its early stages right now it has much room for improvement. I have experienced the client crashing very few times, but when they do happen it is easily restarted even when I'm using a media center remote control with limited functionality.
For more information on Boxee be sure to check out their webpage and register on their site, also check out their forums for more information than I could ever give you.
